The Tricky Part About Flying

I realize that when I sit in front of a screen and try to write something, I usually come up with an idea related to sleep. How late it is, how whacked up my sleeping schedule is, and the billions of promises to myself that I would be asleep by now. Oh well. It's summer, and I didn't get the job, so I can afford to stay up doing things I actually care about doing. Like releasing my writing to an audience of nobody. Trying to figure out how to draw a bike.

I know, I'm trying to work on a cartoon strip and yet I struggle with drawing a bike. Since I was little, the thought of maybe writing for a living has crossed my mind, but I never once thought I would want to draw. So now I'm behind, but I think it will be worth it. Sometimes you can't use words, and sometimes you can't use pictures - sometimes you need both.

I never understood how people drew things. I still don't. I look at drawings, and I can't believe how much detail is in them. It blows my mind how drawers are willing to just sit there and draw lines or repeating tiles and all those spots on the cheetah. I guess in a way it's analogous to writers sitting there with the same manuscript that has almost become too familiar to read, switching words, rhythms, in the pursuit of the right flow.

*abrupt shift in attention*

Ah, yes. I should thank a friend for motivating me to turn back to blogging. I was just reading that friend's blog to get some ideas on one of the superheroes.

This post hasn't had much of a point, so to celebrate the first actual post of this blog, I'm going to end with a picture of a bird (unrelated: there was a segment on How It's Made about the making of mechanical birds from Switzerland).

Also, here's a song that I think complements the wee hours of the morning very well: the acoustic version of Collide by Howie Day.
